Measures to support accessibility

This website is run by the Welsh Blood Service. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).

We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Compliance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. www.welshblood.org.uk is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard:
    • Links along the top of the webpage (both rows of ‘About us’ and ‘Can I donate?’)
    • The keyboard function is not available when selecting ‘Got it’ within the cookie banner.
  • WCAG 2.4.7 Focus Visible:
    • The keyboard focus is not visible on the hamburger menu to close it once expanded.
    • The keyboard focus is not visible on all links, such as ‘Blood’ at 200% zoom.

Content not within the scope of the accessibility regualtions

  • WCAG 1.4.10 Reflow:
    • At 400% zoom and in mobile view (320 x 256 pixels), the chat icon at the bottom of the webpage does not reflow correctly, making some contact options unavailable.

We are actively working to address these issues and improve the website’s accessibility, particularly around keyboard access. The WCAG 1.4.10 Reflow is due to a free, third-party plug-in, which is exempt from the accessibility regulations however, we have passed on the feedback to the provider.

We aim to resolve each of these issues by 01/08/2025.
